Welcome to Cartooning the Post-War World
Cartooning the Post-War World brings together all the newspaper cartoons of Joseph Morewood Staniforth (‘JMS’) which originally appeared in the British Sunday paper the News of the World and the Cardiff daily paper the Western Mail, between the end of the First World War in November 1918 and the death of Staniforth in December 1921.
Over 800 cartoons document the cartoonist’s response to the fluid international and domestic situation as Wales, Britain, Europe and the wider world began to readjust to peacetime conditions. Each cartoon is presented with brief explanatory notes and with an open invitation to users to comment on the image and its possible meanings. The cartoons are accompanied by a range of resources which help to contextualise the cartoonist, his work and the newspapers which published him. Two companion websites are also available: Cartooning the Road to War which covers the years before the outbreak of the First World War, and Cartooning the First World War, which brings together all Staniforth's cartoons during the 1914-18 conflict.
Cartooning the Post-War World is part of the Cartooning the First World War project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and based at University College Cork, where it is led by Professor Chris Williams, Head of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences.
